Mahdlo is a state-of-the-art Youth Zone in the heart of Oldham for 8-21 year olds (up to 25 for young people with a disability). Open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year, we offer an exciting range of activities and opportunities that all young people from across Oldham can access for just 50p as a member.
Mahdlo aims to make a real difference by providing opportunities for young people to come together to meet friends, have new experiences, learn new skills and access the support they need to develop and achieve their potential.
Our vision for Mahdlo is to be ‘a cutting edge youth zone that inspires motivation, pride, aspirations and cohesion’.
Our Mission is:
To deliver high quality activities and experiences for young people from Oldham aged 8-21 (25 with a disability) to enhance the quality of their lives and provide support services for those who need additional help to achieve their potential.
Our fantastic building was funded through a £5million myplace grant, but Mahdlo is a local charity that relies on the support and generosity of the Oldham community to keep our doors open and to provide the services our young people need.
It costs more than £1m each year to run Mahdlo. We are committed to making it affordable for all young people; the low price membership and entrance fees only generate about 10% of the income we need. We rely on donations, grants and community fundraising for the remainder. To find out more about our wonderful Patrons and funders or to make a donation or help us raise funds click here.
We have over 100 volunteers who are key to our team. They bring a wealth of skills and experiences and really help to make Mahdlo a success. We are always keen to hear from anyone interested in volunteering. There are a wide range of roles and opportunities available.
Mahdlo complements the high quality services and facilities that already exist in the town, creating a network of activity and provision. We are keen to explore with local partners how we can successfully work together to offer the best support and provision for young people.
Mahdlo is one of the four myplace funded Youth Zones developed by OnSide along with Carlisle, The Factory (Manchester) and Blackburn. OnSide established out of a recognition by the Chairman of the Board of the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Bill Holroyd CBE DL, that they had hit on a model that successfully addressed the lack of access to affordable quality facilities dedicated to young people. OnSide was set up to replicate the success of Bolton Lads and Girls Club initially across the Northwest, although they are now in the process of developing Youth Zones further afield.
OnSide’s vision is to build, deliver and sustain a network of 21st century youth centres giving young people top quality, safe and affordable places to visit in their leisure time.
With few community facilities for young people and a high level of enthusiasm and commitment from the Council, private sector and young people to bring something wonderful to our town, Oldham was identified as one of the areas that would receive £5m from the myplace programme for the development of a state-of-the-art Youth Zone in its area.
William Lees-Jones of JW Lees Brewery has been a great advocate and supporter of the initiative from the onset taking on the role of inaugural Chairman of the Board and bringing in other local businesses and supporters. William Lees-Jones said, “Young people are the future of every part of society, and I hope that the young people of Oldham will be inspired by Mahdlo and will then go on to achieve great things with their lives.”
The Youth Zone opened in March 2012. Since then we have welcomed thousands of young people through our doors.
