Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week 2017 at Mahdlo
Hate Crime Awareness Week ran 6-12th February 2017, and you can find out more about it here.
We were successful in gaining some funding from the partnership of the Police & Crime Commissioner, Oldham Council and Action Together to deliver activities to raise awareness of Hate Crime. The activities were held across all Mahdlo provision in Junior Zone, Senior Zone, Alternative Provision and in the district sessions of Royton and South Chadderton.
The young people in all sessions began with playing the S.O.P.H.I.E game. The game consists of 30 cards, which represent diverse ethnic, religious and social groups and subcultures; players are set a series of tasks, which challenges preconceptions and encourages development in problem solving and team working skills.
Graham Foulkes who tragically lost his son in the 7/7 bombings in London then spoke to our members. His talk left the group thinking, wanting to know more and led to four new signs ups to our Young Ambassadors group that works to tackle Hate Crime.
Across all sessions young people also took part in a poster making competition to raise awareness of what hate crime is, tasted foods from different cultures and had discussions about how and where to report a hate crime.
