This year’s annual OnSide President’s Cup is back and it is set to be bigger and better than ever before!
The OnSide President’s Cup, kindly supported by Norman K. Stoller CBE KStJ DL, President of Mahdlo, will be hosted by Wigan Youth Zone and their dedicated team on Saturday March 28th.
The unique event will see the power of the Youth Zone network unite as approximately 250 young people will come together from from Wigan, Blackburn, Manchester, Bolton, Carlisle and Oldham Youth Zones to compete in a range of sport and creative competitions for the ultimate prize – the winning Youth Zone!
But that is not all….for the first time ever, a team from the capital city, London, will arrive at Wigan Youth Zone hoping they can take home the glory on their debut performance!
Last year, 150 young people aged 8 -19 competed in the OnSide President’s Cup, with Blackburn Youth Zone crowned as the winner – but who will take home the glory this year?
The winning Youth Zone will be decided after a series of non-traditional games and activities between senior, junior and inclusion teams, including wheelchair basketball, bladderball, gym challenges, art attack, a dance off and many more!
On top of that, each Youth Zone has been asked to put together a video, a chant and a unique mascot together which creatively showcases team members, the Youth Zone strengths and will encourage a positive buzz about the event throughout the network.
One of the day’s main objectives is to demonstrate sporting endeavour, teamwork and fair play. We always expect these criteria to be achieved therefore all the young people will be presented with a souvenir medal, followed by young people performances.
Ryan Powell, Sports Development Coordinator at Wigan Youth Zone said: “The President’s Cup is a great event. It allows all the Youth Zones to integrate and compete against each other, which only ever happens once a year. “No matter which Youth Zone wins, I can guarantee that all the young people will have loads of fun as well as all friends and family watching.”
Stephen Pearson, Project Co-ordinator at OnSide Youth Zones commented: “The buzz and euphoria created in each Youth Zone prior to the event is electric! Every young person is fully focussed, trained and prepared to compete for their Youth Zone. They put all of their efforts, thoughts, concentrations and even bodies on the line! Juniors, seniors and inclusion members will compete for the title where a lot of fun, friends and respect are made across the event which leads to some really great memories and lifelong friends. “Wigan Youth Zone have embraced the spirit of the games by hosting the event this year and bought in an additional creative element to the games including Art Attack and Drama. This will be a Presidents Cup that will go down in history as one of those great Youth Zone days!”
The President’s Cup is open to junior, senior and inclusion members – if you are interested in taking part speak to Frankie, Mahdlo’s Sports Coordinator, or another member of the team.
