Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd has today confirmed that Mahdlo Youth Zone was successful in its bid for a share of their Strong Foundations Grant.
The grant will fund two sports workers between September and December to work with young people aged 13 to 19 or up to 25 with additional needs. We’ll be creating pathways and introductions to sport with a broad appeal and benefits for health and social development.
Members get involved in dozens of different sports at Mahdlo every week, from organised football teams playing against other youth zones to playing basketball with friends, the ever-popular dodgeball and learning new disciplines like American Football and Tri-Golf.
When interviewed for a recent survey for the Children and Young Peoples Alliance Oldham (CYPA), young people mentioned insufficient support and encouragement to be healthier, walk or go to the gym.
When asked what they would change if they were in charge, young people said they would “provide access to free gyms and training to promote the importance of physical health.”
Our gym may not be free, but it is the cheapest in Oldham at 50p per visit. Coupled with our sports offer, we’re looking forward to opening the door to sporting opportunities for young peopled from across Oldham, whether they’re from Royton, Saddleworth or Failsworth.
We’re hugely grateful to Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd for supporting our members, helping us provide opportunities and improving the physical and mental health of Oldham’s young people.
