THEY DID IT! Local residents Chris Wareing and Julie-Ann Davies returned from their epic challenge this week and are proud to share the fantastic news that they have both conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest Peak and have so far raised over £8,000 for Mahdlo. Chris and Julie-Ann were joined on the expedition by other walkers from Manchester Youth Zone, in Harpurhey, who took part to raise money for young people in Manchester. Both Youth Zones are part of the highly successful OnSide network.
When met at the airport by members of team Mahdlo, Julia Ann was the first member of the group to summit and told us “it was horrendous but in a really good way. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and I’m so glad I’ve done it for such a great cause. The whole experience was amazing and I’ve made some great friends along the way. Having Chris and the team from Manchester Youth Zone by my side every step of the way added to the whole adventure. I’d urge anyone who’s thinking of doing something like this for charity to go for it. “
Chris Wareing, Vice Chair at Mahdlo, added “I’d spoken to people that had already climbed Kili and heard their stories but you really have to do it yourself to experience what an achievement it is. There were times when I doubted that I’d reach the summit, but I kept thinking of all the young people that were relying on me to do it for them and that made me dig deep. Both Julie and I paid for the trip ourselves so every penny raised goes straight to Mahdlo. I’d like to thank everyone who’s put their hands in their pockets so far and given from £1 to £1000, if you’d like to sponsor us there’s still time to donate.”
Lucy Lees, Deputy CEO at Mahdlo commented “I just want to say huge thanks to Chris and Julie for raising money for Mahdlo. As a charity we have a huge fundraising challenge this year and need to raise £150,000 through our events and donations from the local community. People like Chris and Julie undertaking their own fundraising challenge is fantastic, if there are people out there who would like to make a difference to the lives of thousands of young people and do something to raise money for Mahdlo, please get in touch with me or my colleague Claire, we’d love to hear from you.”
To sponsor Chris or Julie text MOYZ11 plus the amount in £ to 70070 or contact Lucy or Claire on 0161 624 0111.
