The National Youth Agency themed this year’s Youth Work Week, which ran from 1 to 7 November, Champions of Youth Work and for Mahdlo our staff and volunteers, who go above and beyond each day to support young people across the borough, are our champions
Throughout the week we spent time speaking to youth workers, volunteers, mentors and mentees about their stories.
George joined Mahdlo on a six-week placement in 2013; today he is the charity’s Sports and Outdoor Co-ordinator. Speaking about his personal and professional development within the sector, George said: “I started at Mahdlo as part of university placement and loved the place so much that I decided to volunteer in the sports hall two nights a week. I steadily progressed into a paid role and now I’m facilitating all the sports and outdoor activity. Mahdlo gave me the opportunity to develop my skills and passion, and I’m so proud to now be able to share my experience with Oldham’s young people and help them be the best they can be.”
We also spoke to young people and asked them to share their thoughts and feelings about youth work, and say thank you to youth workers who they thought deserved it!
Callum, aged 17, is a member at Mahdlo and he said: “Mahdlo has been brilliant for me and really helped me sort my head out. They helped me realise what’s important and to get on the right track. It’s changed how I am as a person due to all the opportunities I have access to at the Youth Zone.”
