Our inaugural ‘Business Zone’ Mahdlo Cup Tournament saw local businesses battle it out at an event organised by our Get A Job students.
Last Friday, we hosted our first ‘Business Zone’ Mahdlo Cup Football Tournament. A group of students on our Get A Job course organised the event as part of their enterprise skills development. Local businesses were invited to take part, with all monies raised going back into the enterprise scheme to back future projects. It was a fantastic day for all involved: we entered two teams who were up against competitors from Web Applications UK, Street League, Aspire Training, Music for Young People, North Lancs Training & O2 MID Communications.
The team of budding entrepreneurs behind the event raised over £400 pounds through entry fees and sales of donated refreshments. Will Preston, our Employability and Enterprise Coordinator, said, “This is just the start for our Mahdlo Cup tournaments as we’ll soon be rolling them out for our Junior and Senior Zone members. The Get A Job group worked really hard to pull all this together and special thanks must go to Haden Moxam, Joe Chadwick and Ben Finch for their tremendous effort and organisational skills.”
Proceedings on the day kicked off with a motivating team talk from Mahdlo’s Chairman, Terry Flanagan, before the teams were wowed by the skills of Oldham based professional football freestyler, Craig Gorey.
After 14 hard fought games, which saw the two Mahdlo teams knocked out in closely played semi-finals, the finalists were Web Applications UK and Aspire Training. An early Aspire goal led to a well-deserved reply from Web Apps UK, but Aspire fought back to win the game, and the tournament, 5-1.
